|Good morning, men, With a new President, we are confronted with new challenges and opportunities. Aready, we are witnessing a troubling display of disunity, irrationality, violence and a disregard for the good of man. A dazzling display of self worship has emerged en masse. Looking through our American history, I came acrosss President Lincoln’s “Proclomation Appointing A National Fast Day”. In light of the conflict raging in our country, threatening its very survival, President Lincoln had this to say:
“And, insomuch as we know that, by His divine law, nations like individuals are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world, may we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war, which now desolates the land, may be but a punishment, inflicted upon us, for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole People? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!” With this, President Lincoln called on all Americans to humble themselves before God and consecrate any patriotic fervor first to His glory. We will not be saved by political sloganry, social activism, or projectile displays of decidedly righteous outrage. We will be saved in the mercy of God alone. Men: Those Catholic Men calls you to pick a day this week and fast. Do not fast for the swift and immediate impeachment of Donald Trump. Do not fast for the removal of term limits so as to secure his dominion. Fast for God’s blessing on our country. Fast for the suffering souls of our country. Fast for the conversion of souls who are so wounded that anything short of vitriolic language and violence fails to assuage their pain. Fast for every soul who has forgotten to look to the heavens and adore his God. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam.
